I made decent progress today. There’s a lot of structural work to be done, more than I had anticipated. Or maybe I just overestimated my own abilities. My patience, for sure, although I knew that all along. But despite the slowness, it feels good, the progress. I took a look at the code in Work for the first time in a long time this afternoon. I was taken aback, both about how shoddy some of it was, but also how elaborate other parts were. There are moments of ingenuity that I cannot remember having and honestly have difficulty believing I am capable of.

I remain vigilant about becoming too fixated on best practices. Sometimes I feel I become too focused on doing what’s right, and getting stuck on what amount in effect to complicated logical puzzles, rather than just getting it built and functional, which at this stage is indubitably the most important part. Sometimes I get the feeling that I’m trying to do things in ways that are programmatically “correct” rather than natural to the way I actually think about and reason through these kinds of things. I’m sure I’m becoming a better programmer through it in certain ways, but I also feel myself constrained, and occasionally even routed. Need to strike a better balance moving forward if I am to have any hope of making meaningful progress at a steady pace…
